What is Vinyasa Flow?

Vinyasa flow is a fluid style of yoga that moves from pose to pose (the asanas) synchronising the breath and the movement.  In Sanskrit, yoga means “to yoke” or “union” which in the context of a physical yoga practice is taken to mean the union of the mind and the body, using the breath as a link between the two.

Classes always start with a warm-up and some form of Sun Salutations, a series of moves designed to mobilise the main joints of the body and warm and prepare the muscles for the practice to follow.  There will be some standing and seated postures which will be held for a short period which are designed to build strength and flexibility and we always finish with a pose of relaxation for the mind and the body.  Poses are linked together so the class becomes a moving meditation.

Each class is sequenced differently and options are given so students can access a pose safely.

Why Practive Vinyasa Flow?

There are many benefits to developing a regular yoga practice. Here are just a few. Most people associate yoga with improved flexibility but it also strengthens muscles and keep joints open and mobile, which in combination helps us avoid injury. The breath is central to yoga – in fact – the breath is what makes yoga, yoga. Breathing consciously is calming and helps us cultivate a calm, steady and focused mind. Closing each class with a resting pose teaches us a technique to help with relaxation by calming the body and the mind which in turn helps to combat stress.
